Shirley L. Helmer, 89, of Emporia, died Thursday, October 21, 2010 at the St. Francis Via Christi Hospital in Wichita.
Shirley L. Helmer, the son of Roy and Allie Kennard Helmer, was born September 29, 1921 in Burlington, KS. He married Maxine Bischoff on October 10, 1969 in Emporia. She survives of the home.
He is also survived by one Step-Son, Johnny Walker of Albuquerque, NM; two Step-Daughters, Ellen Ferman of Mulvane, KS, and Sharon Whitney of Elmdale, KS; one Sister, Anita Duft of Iola, KS; six Grandchildren and seven Great-Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one Sister, Wynona Strahm; and one Brother, Delbert Helmer.
Mr. Helmer worked at the Fanestil Meat Packing Co. from 1953 thru 1986. In 1988 he went to work at the Emporia Wal-Mart until his death. He was a member and Elder at the Messiah Lutheran Church.
The memorial service will be held at the Messiah Lutheran Church at 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Services will be conducted by Pastor Norbert Tegtmeier of the church. Mr. Helmer has been cremated. Donations to either Messiah Lutheran Church or to Hetlinger Developmental Services can be sent in care of the funeral home.
