Shirley Temple Slaymaker 82 passed away peacefully on June 7, 2018. She was at home with husband Ron by her side. They had recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Shirley was born on November 5 1935 in Newton, Kansas the daughter of Macloren and Marie (Frye) Temple. She attended school in Peabody and graduated valedictorian in her class in 1953. She attended Kansas State Teacher College and started her teaching career in Valley Center with a 60 hour certificate. After graduation in 1960 she taught business and was school counselor at Neosho Rapids High School and at Roosevelt High School. Shirley received her Masters degree in 1962 from Kansas State Teacher College and her Doctorate degree from Arkansas University in 1970. After teaching for 10 years in the Business Department at Kansas State Teachers College she was a realtor with Mc Cracken Real Estate for 7 years. In 2003 Shirley owned and operated Poehler Antique Mall . Her love of antiques followed her to her last days.
With a maiden name like Shirley Temple it is understandable that she had a vast collection of Shirley Temple items. She enjoyed traveling with husband Ron as they made yearly trips to many parts of the world on basketball jobs. As busy as she was she was also a devoted mother and wife and had a deep caring for those less fortunate. Shirley was an original 14 year member of the board of directors for the renovation of the Granada Theatre. She took great pride in the finished product. She will be missed
Shirley married Ron Slaymaker on May 25, 1956 at Peabody, Kansas. He survives. She is also survived by her sons; Rocky Slaymaker and his wife, Bev Beers, Emporia, and Dr. Lance Slaymaker and his wife, Katie Slaymaker, Overland Park; Grandchildren; Colin, Reed, Libby, and Tate Slaymaker, Overland Park, Sister-In-Law; Karla Lane, Denver, CO, Nieces; Shelly Lane and Teri Slaymaker, Denver, CO, and nephews; Scott Deschner, Kansas City, and Trent Deschner, Topeka.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter; Haley.
Shirley was a member of Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church, National Education Association, and the Kansas Realtors Association,
Funeral services will be conducted at the Emporia Granada Theater, 807 Commercial Street, on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Damon Leiss, Maryville, Missouri.
The family will receive friends at the Emporia Granada Theater Friday evening, June 15, from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M.
