Skyler Brock Hively, Waverly, Kansas, died July 24, 2011 at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington, Kansas. He was 21.
Skyler was born April 15, 1990 at Lakin, Kansas, the son of Seth and Renee (Lopez) Hively, Waverly, Kansas.
Skyler attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, Emporia, Kansas; graduated from Waverly High School, Waverly, Kansas in 2008; and attended Coffeyville Community College, Coffeyville, Kansas on a Rodeo Scholarship. Skyler was an avid horseman and outdoorsman. Skyler’s dog Snuff was his constant companion.
Skyler was self-employed as a professional farrier, horse trainer, and ranch cowboy. He raised horses and rode horses for customers. Skyler day-worked as a ranch cowboy in Kansas and Oklahoma, and team roped competitively. He won second at the 2011 USTRC team roping Winter Classic, Lazy E Arena, Guthrie, Oklahoma; the 2010 United Rodeo Association Rookie heeler of the year; the 2009 NIRA team roping, Guymon, Oklahoma; the USTRC Northeast Kansas Team Roping Championship in 2008 and competed at the 2008 USTRC National Finals, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Other lifetime achievements include being a member of the 2008 Waverly High School Eight Man Championship football team; 2008 first and second all-around team roper at the Lakin High School Rodeo; 2006 first place Heeler in DX Youth Rodeo, and 2002 4-H Horsemanship Grand Champion.
Skyler was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia, the United States Team Roping Championship (USTRC), United Rodeo Association (URA), National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA), the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), the Kansas High School Rodeo Association (KHRA) 2005-2008, and the National Rifleman’s Association (NRA).
Survivors include his parents, Seth and Renee Hively; brother, Rawlin Hively of the home; grandparents, Nola Hively-Bewley of Waverly, Kansas, Betty Smith of Emporia, Kansas, and Bob Hively of Rochester, Michigan; step-grandmother, Janie Hively of Rochester, Michigan; great-grandmother, Gladys Hively of Chanute, Kansas; aunts, Angela Charlton and Marlina Poff; uncles, Shawn Lopez, Gary Poff, Madison Hively, and Jerry Charlton; great aunts, Sarah Lopez, Margie Guesnier, Annette Hively, Helen Stevenson; great uncles, John Stevenson, Gary Guesnier, Jeff Hively, Rick Hively; cousins, Jacob Mohajir, Kaylani Poff, Ric Poff, Darton Poff, Chase, Caleb and Isabella Lopez; great cousins, Francine Guesnier, John Guesnier, Steffanie Guesnier, Justin Hively and Zachary Hively.
Skyler was preceded in death by his grandfather, Arnold Lopez; step-grandfathers, Robert “Bigun” Bewley, and Bob Smith; great-grandmother, Norlene Stevenson; great-grandfathers, Herbert Stevenson and Jack Hively.
A visitation will be held at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia, Wednesday, July 27, 2011 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 4:00 P.M., with Father Rich Warsnak officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Skyler Hively Memorial Fund, and sent in care of the funeral home.
