Stanley Oliver Sommers, Jr.

March 2, 1945 — January 31, 2012

Stanley “Stan” Oliver Sommers, Jr., owner of International Tours, Emporia, Kansas, passed away at Newman Regional Health, Emporia, Tuesday, January 31, 2012. He was 66.

Stan was born on March 2, 1945, in San Angelo, Texas, the son of Stanley Oliver and Millie McCully Sommers. He married Karen Wayman on June 8, 1968 in Emporia. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include: two sons, Stanley “Trey” Oliver Sommers III and fiancee Jessica Schaefer and her children Dallas and David of Emporia and Christopher Sommers and wife Cynthia of Telluride, Colorado; four grandchildren, Tyler James Sommers and Jessica Danielle Sommers of Shawnee, Kansas, and Lillian Grace and William Beck Sommers of Telluride; and a sister, Linda and husband Jim Keister of Phoenix, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jodie Edward Sommers.

Stan grew up in Olathe, Kansas, where he graduated from Olathe High School. He was a quarterback for the school and was nicknamed "the man with the golden arm." He was an Eagle Scout and member of Order of the Arrow. He graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in business administration.


He was drafted into the Army in 1968 and served in the 3rd armored division in Glenhausen, Germany and achieved the rank of sergeant. Stan began working at Emporia State Bank in 1970 as the commercial loan vice-president until 1985. He graduated from Graduate School of Banking, Madison, Wisconsin and the American Banking School of Commercial Lending, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 1985, he joined International Tours as president until death.


Stan was also a member of the following organizations: First United Methodist Church, Emporia; Emporia Rotary Club for 40 years where he served as president from 1989-1990 and funded two Paul Harris Fellows; Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, where he served as Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors in 1992; Regional Development Association where he had also served as a past president; and Emporia Enterprises from 1998 until 2003 and was chairman in 2000 and 2001.

He was also a National Association of Underwater Instructors assistant SCUBA instructor, and a member of the Kansas Divers. He belonged to Emporia Country Club, where he was also a member of their men's golf association. His hobbies included traveling, scuba diving, golfing, and he also enjoyed coaching little league baseball.


Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012 at First United Methodist Church, Emporia. Services will be conducted by Pastor Butch Ritter. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Maplewood Cemetery, Emporia.
