Susan Daniel-Brey, 59, Emporia, passed away Monday morning, April 23, 2018, at her home, being graciously received into the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ.
The Rev. Susan K. Daniel Brey was born September 23, 1958 in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of William Duane Daniel, Sr. and Sandra June (Kauffman) Daniel. After growing up in Manhattan, Kansas, St. Louis, Missouri, Overland Park, Kansas Centralia and Fulton, Missouri; and Grove, Oklahoma; she then graduated with honors from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville, Kansas in 1976. Rev. Daniel-Brey earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Pittsburg State University in 1980. During this time she was a member of several honor societies: Kappa Theta Epsilon (mathematics), Phi Upsilon Omicron (home economics), Phi Theta Kappa (education), Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership), and Phi Kappa Phi (scholarship). She then taught with the Wichita School District, Roosevelt Middle School, from January 1981 to July 1982.
Throughout her lifetime, the family was involved in The United Methodist Church.
Sensing that God had been calling her into the ordained ministry of the church, Rev. Daniel-Brey enrolled at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. In 1986 she graduated Cum Laude with a Master of Divinity degree, and then returned to Kansas to be appointed as a pastor. She was ordained a Deacon in the United Methodist Church in 1984 and an Elder in 1988. Rev. Daniel-Brey has served the charges of Trinity-St. James in Coffeyville; Toronto-Fall River, Wesley House in Pittsburg, Waterville-Blue Rapids, Burlington, Coffeyville First United Methodist Church as Associate, Angola-Valeda, Columbus, And Grace in Emporia. She entered disability status due to cancer on September 1, 2016 and officially retired from Great Plains Conference on July 2, 2017.
Susan married Edward A. Brey on April 27, 1996 in Waterville, Kansas. Together they have a child, Stephanie Brey. They adopted her son, Robert Daniel in April 1992.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Duane Daniel, Sr. her step-father, Albert Caler, her step-brother, Dennis Caler, her mother, Sandra Daniel Caler, and step-son, Bill Brey.
Survivors include her husband, Ed, of the home, daughter, Stephanie Brey, Emporia; son, Robert (Leann) Daniel, Erie; brother, William D. Daniel, Jr., Griffin, GA, her maternal aunt, Arlene (Paul) Griffiths, Coffeyville, Ks; a paternal aunt, Sharon Hull, Tulsa, OK; and many cousins. Survivors also include her step-daughter-in-law, Jennie Brey, Prairie Village, KS; step-son, Rodney Brey, Willard, Ks; granddaughters, Amber (Nathan) Becerra, Prairie Village; Calley (Denis) Gabrilyuk, Fayetteville, NC; Kimberly Daniel, Erie; two great-grandsons, Gentry and Hank, Prairie Village.
Civic memberships have included Rotary International (16 years), Kiwanis (2 years), and currently a member of Chapter GT of the PEO (14 years). She was involved in construction and fundraising with Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at the Burlington United Methodist Church, Burlington, Kansas. The service will be conducted by Pastor Warren Hannon, of the church, and Pastor Charity Sandstrom, First Friends Church, Emporia.
The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 9:00 A.M. Thursday.
A Graveside service will be conducted at the Whiting Cemetery, Whiting, Kansas at 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 27.
