Susetta “Susie” Marie Goodell Waidley Button, 90, died on December 3, 2011 at Alterra Sterling House of Emporia, Kansas.
Susetta Marie Goodell was born on August 13, 1921 in Strong City, Kansas, to George W. and Maude Henry Goodell. She graduated from Strong City High School May of 1937 at the age of 16. She married Clarence “Bud” Waidley of Elmdale, Kansas on July 2, 1938. They moved to Wichita, Kansas where Bud was a Wichita Police Officer and Susie worked as a housewife and mother. The couple’s three children were born in Wichita, and after living in Wichita eight years, they moved to Elmdale and opened a small grocery store and endured many floods including the devastating 1951 flood.
After the ’51 flood the family moved to Beaumont, Texas, and after five years, they moved to Americus, Kansas, where she worked for Hallmark cards and continued her education receiving her Bachelor’s of Science from Emporia State University on May 29, 1970, and her Masters of Science on May 11, 1973, and taught school in Wellington, Kansas and Warsaw, Missouri until her retirement in 1985.
She was married and divorced from her second husband Ralph Button of Warsaw, Missouri. Susetta was member of the Americus United Methodist Church and Retired Teachers Association of Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bud, who passed away September 13, 1981 in Clinton, Missouri; her parents; sisters, Betsy Goodell and Julia Goodell Britain; and brothers, David Goodell, George “Pete” Goodell, Homer “Smoke” Goodell and Joseph Lewis Goodell.
Susetta is survived by: three children and their spouses, Michael Henry Waidley and wife Vi of Beaumont, Texas, Linda Kay Grother and husband Kermit of Americus, and Joseph Allen Waidley and wife Pat of Emporia; two sisters, Barbara Adkins and Janice Stead both of Emporia; eight grandchildren and families, Mickael Waidley, II and Alicia Manual of Beaumont, David Grother of Americus, Nathan Grother of Oskaloosa, Kansas, Aaron Grother of Lawrence, Kansas, Matthew Grother of Urbana, Missouri, Jay Waidley of Emporia, and Carrie Wyatt of Derby, Kansas; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia, Kansas. Pastor Norbert Tegtmeier will be officiating. Graveside Services will be Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Elmdale Cemetery in Elmdale, Kansas. Memorial contributions to Hand In Hand Hospice may be sent in care of the funeral home.
