Sylvia Lavonne Flott

March 5, 1939 — July 31, 2014

Sylvia LaVonne Flott (75) died Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Holiday Resort, Emporia, Kansas.

Sylvia was born March 5, 1939 and grew up on a farm near Claflin, KS, where she lived with her parents, Alvin and Jennie Mae Bryant Harzman and her brother Leonard Harzman. Sylvia received her teaching degree at Emporia State Teachers College and began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse near Olpe. She was a special education teacher in several area school districts, and was teaching at William Allen White elementary school in USD 253 at the time of her retirement.

While attending college in Emporia, Sylvia met another farm kid, Phillip Lee Flott, and the two were married August 28, 1960. They lived on a farm east of Emporia, where they raised their three children. Phillip passed away on the farm in 1992 at the age of 50.

Sylvia loved gardening (and hated weeding). She was an avid bird watcher and passed on her love of nature to her children. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and devoured books about the Union Army and Kansas history. Later in her life, she enjoyed traveling and went to Germany, Costa Rica, the northwestern United States, and New Orleans.

She was a long-time member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia, and often said that going to church on Sunday set the right tone for the rest of the week. Sylvia looked forward to snow birding in Houston each winter with her daughter. It was in Houston where she learned that she was suffering from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a rare devastating brain disease that shortened her life.

She is survived by her three children, Phyllis Flott of Nashville, Tennessee, Denise (Flott) Mathley of Houston, Texas, and Eric (Renee) Flott of Emporia; two grandchildren, Phillip Njoroge of Memphis, Tennessee and Lydia Njoroge of Emporia; and a brother, Leonard Harzman of Macomb, Illinois.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 P.M., Wednesday evening, August 6, 2014 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 11th and Neosho in Emporia. Pastor Norbert Tegtmeier will officiate. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, near the family farm, east of Emporia.

Memorial contributions to the Phillip and Sylvia Flott Scholarship Fund with Messiah Lutheran Church may be sent in care of the funeral home. To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of Sylvia Lavonne Flott, please visit our flower store.
