Thomas Wilson Blackburn

January 24, 1932 — September 21, 2014

Thomas Wilson Blackburn, 82, passed away Sunday morning at Holiday Resort after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.


He is survived by his daughters, Janis Meyer and her husband Keith, Lisa Hollern and her husband Lane, all of Emporia, and Mary Jansen and her husband Derek of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; his son Gregg Johnson of Baldwin, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Also surviving include: his sister, Maxine Blackburn Knight of Emporia; brother, Robert and Sue Blackburn of El Dorado, and sister Mary Blackburn Tash and her husband Bill of Wichita, Kansas.


Tom was married to Nora Jean Peterson of Emporia. They later divorced. He then married Donna McCloud of Anchorage, Alaska and was later divorced.


The son of Leonard Thomas Blackburn and Alverta Hubbard Blackburn, Tom was born January 24, 1932 in Emporia, Kansas. He served five years in the United States Navy in the SEABEES and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. His assignments included USS Henrico, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, San Diego, and Midway Island.


Tom was employed by Didde-Glaser for 25 years, traveling extensively as a printing press technician. He also worked for the Kansas Turnpike Authority.


Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 4:00 P.M. Friday, September 26, 2014 at Roberts-Blue Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. The service will be conducted by Mr. Lee Hoskins. Inurnment will follow at Hunt Cemetery, five miles east of Emporia, with military services provided by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
