Velma Eva Thompson, 87, of Emporia, Kansas, passed peacefully on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
Velma was born on July 30, 1930 in Americus, Kansas, the daughter of Everette and Mabel Childs Danford. She married Richard Thompson on June 25, 1949 in Emporia. He survives.
Other surviving family members include: son, Terry (Marcia) Thompson of Emporia; daughter, Shirley (Mark) Payne of Spring, Texas; brother, Eddie Danford of Strong City, Kansas; sisters, Isabel Wheat of Emporia, and Rae Jeanette Byrd of Lee's Summit, Missouri; grandchildren, Jeremy Payne, Patrick Payne, Brandon Thompson, and Kimberly Thompson; and great-grandchildren, Colbie Payne, and Bryson Payne.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jimmie Danford; and sisters, Margie Burton, Helen Payton, and Eileen Bender.
Velma’s childhood was spent in Chase County Kansas, growing up on a farm attending a one-room schoolhouse. She attended Strong City High School and after graduating moved to Emporia, where she worked as a supervisor at Hallmark Cards. Velma later went to work at Newman Regional Health as an admissions clerk and switchboard operator for 25 years. Velma enjoyed fashion, sewing, reading, gardening, decorating, and traveling. Her biggest joy was spending time with her family and planning for the holidays. She will be remembered as a beautiful, kind, loving, strong-spirited person who was very soft spoken. She would want you to be doing some kind of act for someone, to never give up and do unto others as you would want them to do unto you.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Emporia Friends of the Zoo, Michael J.
