Vernon Eugene Matson, 85, of Emporia died on January 18, 2011 at his son’s home in rural Chase County under hospice care.
  
  
  Vernon Eugene was born on October 14, 1925 in Emporia, Kansas, the son of Westy Frank and Mary Elizabeth King Matson. He married Mary Jo Exline Overstake on January 17, 1949 in Emporia, Kansas. She died on July 20, 1968 in Emporia. He then married Betty Lehnherr on February 9, 1969 in Emporia. She survives.
  
  
  Other survivors include: sons, Westy W. Matson, and Larry Matson both of Emporia, and Barney Lehnherr of Hayesville, Kansas; daughters, Maryana Mayer of Spokane, Washington, Gretchen Woodfield of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Pam Gull of El Dorado, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.
  
  
  He is preceded in death by his first wife, parents, Brother Warren Matson, and a grandson Jason Matson.
  
  
  Vernon was a real estate broker for Matson Real Estate and Ek Real Estate. He also owned Matson Plumbing. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Emporia, Navy Aircorp, Emporia Masonic Lodge #12 A.F and A.M., and The Railroad Union as well as the Plumber Union.
  
  
  Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 21, 2011 at the Patio Garden in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The service will be conducted by Pastor John Davis of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Military honors will be conducted by Ball-McColm Post #5 American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
