Viola Louise Hastings

Viola Louise Hastings, Emporia, Kansas, passed away at Newman Regional Health, Emporia, on Thursday, December 15, 2011. She was 96.

Viola Louise Schmitz was born in Alma, Kansas, on April 16, 1915, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Noller) Schmitz. She married Kenneth Hastings in Alma on November 26, 1939. He died June 24, 2005.

Surviving family members include: a son, Robert Hastings, Hood River, Oregon; daughters, Marlys Patton and her husband Dr. John Patton of Emporia, and Carol Honza and her husband David, Columbia, Maryland; nine grandchildren, Robyn Groat (Randal), Bryan Hastings, Demarick Patton (Beth), Chadron Patton (Sarah), Breanne Etkie (Shawn), Aralee Nemmers (Mark), Correy Honza (Susie), Brandon Honza (Lauren), and Landry Honza (Niki); twelve great-grandchildren, Evan Groat, Alex Groat, Caydence Patton, Raquel Patton, Sienna Patton, Maddox Patton, Cash Patton, Brynlee Etkie, Breanne Honza, David Honza, Katelyn Honza, and Cole Honza; and one great-grandchild expected soon.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Arnold and Clarence Schmitz; great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Jenna Patton; and daughter-in-law, Jan Hastings.

Viola was a member of First Congregational Church, the Women’s Fellowship of the church, and Sigma Tau Mother’s Club. She taught in Wabaunsee County, Kansas for three years before her marriage. She worked in Topeka, Kansas as a beautician, and later as a secretary at the State Farm Insurance Agency in Emporia. She has been a resident of Emporia since 1957.

Funeral services will be held at First Congregational Church, Emporia, Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. The service will be conducted by Rev. Andrew McHenry of the church and Rev. Al Areheart, Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday evening, December 19, 2011, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
