Virginia A. Kirk Paine
Virginia Paine, of Admire, entered into God’s presence forever on July 13, 2016, at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Osage City. She was 99. Virginia Alice Patterson, daughter of Franklin and Susan Dixon Patterson, was born February 25, 1917 near Springfield, Missouri. The youngest of 7 children, Virginia grew up in Springfield, graduated from Central High School, attended Drury College Conservatory of Music, and Missouri State University (SMSTC).
While visiting family in Admire, Kansas, Virginia met her husband, Howard H. Kirk. They were later united in marriage on August 25, 1940, at the Methodist Church in Admire. They made their home on a farm in the Mont Ida community near Garnett, Kansas. Cancer took Howard’s life on July 3, 1951. Their children are: Joseph R. Kirk (Nancy), Caroline E. Kirk, and Philip H. Kirk (Marilyn). Virginia and her children moved to Emporia after Howard’s death. She worked for 23 years at Emporia State University (KSTC) as a Psychometric Technician, in the Bureau of Tests and Measurement. She retired in 1980. Earlier, she had worked at Citizen’s National Bank and the Lyon County Clerk’s office.
In 1954, Virginia married Vernon E. Paine. The next year they moved to his birthplace farm near Admire. Mr. Paine passed away on July 25, 1989. Also preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers: Wilkie. Kyle and Aubrey Patterson, three sisters: Elizabeth Patterson, Sabra Taylor and Crystal Dutcher, and an infant daughter, Barbara Ann Kirk.
She is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren: Christine McPike (Todd), Jeffery Kirk, David Burns (Tammy), Daniel Burns (Susan). Mark Murnahan (Peggy), Cynthia Doebele (Mark), and Kevin Kirk (Alisa), 17 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Virginia was a woman of faith and through the compassion and strength of Christ, she coped with her trials. She was a dedicated member of the Admire United Methodist Church. She served on the administrative council and taught a Sunday School class for a number of years. She was a talented musician, accompanying for church worship for nearly 60 years and playing for weddings and funerals in the area. She was also active in the United Methodist Women following her retirement. In 2004, she was honored by the United Methodist Church Foundation for Evangelism with a Denman Evangelism Award at the Kansas East Conference,
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 27. 2016, at the Admire United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Mont Ida cemetery following the service. Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home has the arrangements.
