Virginia Lee Morris, a lifelong resident of Emporia, Kansas, passed away at her home on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the age of 84. Known as Ginger, she was born on October 28, 1941, in Emporia to Olma and Velma Peak.

Ginger built her life around hard work, horses, and determination. She dedicated many years to working at Emporia Livestock Sales and P & H Cattle Company and worked right alongside the men in the family doing farm and ranch work where she earned the respect of those around her through her work ethic and straightforward nature.

Horses were not simply a hobby for Ginger — they were where she felt most at home. She was a respected horsewoman, barrel racer, and proud member of NBHA throughout her life. The horse community and western way of life brought her joy, purpose, and lifelong friendships.

Those who traveled the barrel racing circuit with Ginger remembered her as the one behind the wheel — driving fast, deciding where everyone would sleep, where the horses would stall, and making sure things got done. She expected people to work hard, do what was right, and pull their weight. She could be strong-willed and direct, but she was dependable, resilient, and unapologetically herself.

Friends remember Ginger with a cigarette in hand, a beer nearby, and a determination that carried her through life on her own terms. She leaves behind memories of grit, independence, laughter, horses, hard work, and a life lived honestly and fully. In 1961, Ginger married Glenn Unruh in Emporia, and from this union they had a son, Rhett Unruh, who preceded her in death. She later married Paul E. Morris, who passed away in 2017.

Virginia is survived by her family, including her brothers Vic Peak and wife Jan of Emporia, Scott Peak and wife Jana of Emporia, and her sister Chrysanne Haselhorst of Allen. She was also an aunt to many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Olma and Velma Marie Wood Peak; her husband, Paul E. Morris; and her son, Rhett Unruh.

Cremation has been arranged, with plans for a graveside service to be held at a later date beside her son, Rhett.

Virginia “Ginger” Morris lived life her own way — hardworking, independent, resilient, and deeply connected to the horses and people who shaped her life.
