Walter Irving Shaw, 72, died Friday July 10, 2015 in Emporia, Kansas.


Walter Irving was born April 18, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Walter E. and Donna (Schmidt) Shaw. In 1965, Irving graduate from Kansas State University, where he received his B.A. in political science and on June 24th, he married Brenda Goatley in Wichita.

Irving later received his Juris Doctorate from the St. Louis School of Law, graduating Cum Laude in 1968. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, Order of Woolsack, St. Louis University Law Journal 1966-1968, The Kansas Sentencing Commission 1999-2003, Lyon-Chase Counties Bar Association serving as president 1988-1989, Kansas Bar Association, Kansas Association for Justice, and Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He served in the United States Air Force JAG Corp and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia.


Irving is survived by his wife, Brenda, of the home. Other survivors include: son, David Shaw and wife Courtney of Overland Park, Kansas; daughters, Kimberly Shaw of Merriam, Kansas, Kristen Sanchez and husband Gilbert of El Dorado, Kansas, Lisa Hafliger and husband Clint of Manhattan, Kansas; grandchildren, Logan Shaw, Conner Shaw, Whitney Shaw, Kynzie Sanchez, Kru Sanchez, Mason Hafliger, and Avery Hafliger.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Jennifer Shaw.


Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. The Rosary will be recited 5:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. The Celebrant will be Father Brandon Farrar of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
