World War II Veteran, Warren J. Horton, 87, of Emporia, Kansas, died at his home on May 9, 2012.

He was born in Greenwood County, Kansas, February 20, 1925 to Neva (Smith) and William L. Horton on the family farm. He was married to Maxine Schroer, on September 24, 1950, at the Schroer family farm in Marion County, Kansas. He is survived by his wife of 62 years and five children; Bruce Horton and wife Barb, New Alexandria, Penn; Melba Brumback and husband Paul, Merriam, Kansas; Bonnie Horton, Prairie Village, Kansas; and Joan Horton, Overland Park, Kansas. As well as his grandchildren Blake Cheary and wife Danelle, Santee, California; and Brandon Brumback, Chicago, Illinois; step-grandchildren Stacy and Becky Yanits, New Alexandria, Penn; great-grandsons Gavin, Connor and Brady Cheary, and step great-granddaughter MaKenzi Shipley. He was preceded in death by his five older siblings.

On July 10, 1943, he was inducted into the Army, and proudly served his country until he was wounded on January 7, 1945. He would have returned to active duty had he been physically able. For being wounded in combat he was awarded The Purple Heart, and for his courageous actions during The Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded The Silver Star and The Bronze Star. In 2004, he received the French Legion of Honor award, the highest award given by France for helping liberate their country during WWII. Being a recipient of multiple blood transfusions, he felt inspired to donate over 10 gallons of blood. He served as State Commander of the Disabled American Veterans in 1994 and chaplain for the American Legion for several years. He held lifetime memberships to the DAV, American Legion, The Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

As the original coordinator for the VA Transportation Service in Emporia, he personally drove numerous fellow veterans to area VA Hospitals. He successfully lobbied for legislation to establish a Purple Heart Automobile tag in Kansas and was a member of the Emporia All-Veterans Memorial Committee. The Flint Hills Area Vietnam Veterans made him an honorary member in appreciation for his role in bring the Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall to Emporia in 1995.

He worked a variety of jobs, and was a self-employed carpenter when he retired. He was an assistant troop leader for the Boy Scouts, received the Silver Beaver Award in 1984, and was a life member and longtime supporter of the Girl Scouts. He was a past member of the Emporia Kiwanis Club. He received an honorary high school diploma from Madison High School, Madison, Kansas.

To show his devotion to the country he loved, he flew the American flag every day at his home.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2012 at The First United Methodist Church, Emporia. Burial with military honors will follow at Grant Township Cemetery, Marion County, Kansas.

A visitation will be held Sunday, May 13, 2012, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.

Memorial contributions to The Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 36; The First United Methodist Church; or Hand in Hand Hospice may be sent in care of the funeral home.
