Warren R. Smith, 90, of Americus, Kansas, died on Friday, December 27, 2013 at Holiday Resort Care Center in Emporia.
  
  
  
  Warren was born on September 8, 1923 in Emporia, the son of Clarence R. and Cathryn Bailey Smith. He married Doris H. Phillips on May 26, 1946 in Emporia. She survives of the home.
  
  
  
  Other surviving family members include: his son, Steven D. Smith and wife Robin of Charlotte, North Carolina; a daughter, Arlan Gerhardt and husband Ken of Woodland Park, Colorado; two grandsons, Stefan Gerhardt and Michael Gerhardt; one step-granddaughter, two great-grandchildren, Diedrich Gerhardt, and Laura Gerhardt; and three step-great-grandchildren.
  
  
  
  He is preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Norma Jean Ross and Patsy Ruth Shaver.
  
  
  
  Warren was a teacher in North Lyon County before retiring. He served in the United States Marine Corps, serving in the First Armored Amphibian Battalion and also in Kwajalein, Roi, Namur, Guam, and Okinawa. Warren was a member of Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, both in Emporia.
